La Madonna del Giglio
Our Lady of Lilies (mixed technique with clay faces in relief on the canvas cm 100X100) We can easily guess the event which has inspired this work: the cruise liner Costa Concordia drifted onto the rocks somewhere around the Isle of Giglio. Anyway, the artist doesn't linger over the victims of the accident, perhaps they have been swallowed up by the dark in the background, on the contrary he wants to emphasize the miracle accomplished by the elegant Lady in Red twirling around the wreck. Perhaps the flowers in her hands are for the dead, but her purifying dance has saved thousands of people. She is Our Lady of Lilies, a merry-fluttering presence, a symbol of Providence and Beauty, in spite of the tragic event. Captain Schettino is sitting on a rock, he is dazed and incapable of action. He stares and can't act. Action is not his concern. Kipling and his "Captains Courageous" belong to the past. Today's world mystifies everything and teaches how not to act, being inactive is more reassuring. Schettino has learned all that and stares at the Lady in Red, he as well needs being saved.
