Limes Limen, between threshold and boundary – metaphor of the time and the place we’re living in

Limit is a word including two concepts expressed by two words originated from Latin that have two diametrically opposed meanings: Limes and limen, the former to be meant as an impassable boundary , a barrier, the latter to be seen as a threshold, a doorway, a view on some other new horizons.

In this duality, there’s the volubility of the perception of “limit” in history, that nowadays has overcome itself and stands over it. It’s gone over geography, science and technology. It’s gone over.

According to me and regarding how politics is managing the world, the dualism between the idea that supports the free exchanging and relationing of goods and men and the one supporting the creation of walls, boundaries, new nationalism and barriers, is more than evident.

In the picture, a burning line dividing the photography in two parts, is the place of transition, a place overcoming none of the two perspectives; it deals with somewhere dynamics, alive, always open to changes. It is an uncertain and temporary place. It’s a line that burns the limit, in which clash and peace, diversity and identity engage the speed of change. In this fringe, it is possible to find the opportunity of a new balance.

Photography becomes itself metaphor because it’s the only medium able to immortalize time and a place where the perception of the limit, in such a flowing period , can alterate its own state in a very short time.
