New Ruins
2015 HD Video (1080p) Pal, colour, sound Duration: 2'10" New Ruins portrays a static shot of the Zeppelin tribune on the former Nazi party rally ground, the Zeppelin field in Nuremberg, Germany. As a latter-day ruin the tribune has acquired a dual function, apart from being a tourist site it also serves as a place for the leisure activities of the local people including a yearly car-racing event. Albert Speer built the structure whose desire was to create neo-classical buildings that would in time become beautiful ruins. Although the cheap materials used in the construction belie the notion of ‘ruin value’, the everyday use of the Zeppelin ground successfully assimilates the ‘ruin’ as the backdrop of contemporary life. Exhibited as part of Uneven Development and commissioned by Beaconsfield Gallery, London for Harnessing the Wind.
