The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is a recurrence established by the UN General Assembly, by resolution number 54/134 of 17 December 1999.
This date was chosen in memory of the brutal murder in 1960 of the three Mirabal sisters considered an example of revolutionary women for the effort with which they tried to oppose the regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1930-1961)

the blood on the face
the retching

the acrid smell of sick sweat
the cross on the chest
immolated to pain

the fog in the eyes
terror in the face

the rest is torn apart
mauled and tattered
raped
