The technique adopted is the so called “pittura sottovetro” ( painting under-glass), by which we mean painting the reverse side of a glass surface, so that the final image is visible from the opposite side, as in a mirror.
Adopting this technique, the time required for the painting is the inverse of that of a “normal” one: Details such as the nose, eyes and mouth- which normally are painted later are painted before backgrounds and flesh-colours, which in a “normal “ painting come first. This is the reason why once painted, the images cannot be corrected or modified.
On the other hand one of the attractive qualities of “pittura sottovetro” is the sheen of the colours, which are visible through the glass surface.
