The Abduction of Europa

The Abduction of Europa

Painting, Sacred / Mythological, Oil, 48x36x1cm
Europa (Greek Εὐρώπη) was the beautiful daughter of the Phoenician king of Tyre, who was abducted by Zeus, the King of the gods according to Greek mythology. Overwhelmed by his love for Europa, Zeus transformed himself into a magnificent white bull and appeared in the sea shore of Tyre east Mediterranean [ South Lebanon now] .

The bull seduced Europa and took her to the island of Crete, where she later gave her name to the continent Europe. She became the first queen of Crete and had by Zeus three king sons. She was worshiped under the name of Hellotis in Crete, and the Hellotia festival was held in her honor. Zeus reproduced the shape of the white bull that was used to seduce Europa, in the stars in the constellation Taurus.
