Russian History,(Peoples' Version)
For millions of ordinary Russians the last century was one of brutality and genocide at the hands of Stalin and Hitler. I wanted to reflect this in my work.
The missing fifth doll reflects the many Russians who were 'disappeared'.
The response to the exhibition we held was very positive.
The response to my particular use of the dolls was very humbling. A number of visitors commented on how emotionally moving they found my piece - including one lady with a Russian family background being moved to tears.
I was deeply humbled as she told me her family history.
Later reflection reminded me of the power of art - to open our hearts, share conversations, reflections, emotions and reach each other on deep personal levels.
I apologised to the lady for any hurt my art might have caused her - she thanked me for portraying a part of her life/history too long buried.
