KUKERI (Mummers)I

KUKERI I is an interpretation of the most spectacular and ancient manifestation of Bulgarian folk culture-the Kukeri (Mummer’s Games). Wearing sheepskins, dramatic huge masks and copper bells attached to their belts, the kukeri perform certain dances and songs and reflect an ancient nature tradition honouring the cycles of life, death and rebirth. Only men are allowed to perform that ritual. The black colour in Mummer’s Games is a symbol of The Earth and the Mother Goddess.
