Codec Lossy #03
Codec lossy , video installation, 3 channels, colour, stereo, 2011
The vision of the machine:
Codec lossy is a video triptych on self-generation digital image and information flows. The author of the work is the machine, the computer, which, through a codec, an algorithm that encodes and decodes the signals, digitally forward the video stream in the form of numerical data suitable to be stored, a video stream, the mathematical "formula of the image". Codec lossy is the quintessence of the video signal as perceived by the machine and not the human eye. The reduction of memory leads to a loss of information that suggests a picture amnesia and a separation of the physical size of the video image from the brain, the image of logic. But the codec also brings us back to the etymological meaning of the codex; originally, in fact, was the name of "plaques" of wax on which the ancient Romans took notes, which are linked to form a sort of primitive notepads!. In Latin codex had the general meaning of compact book, like today's tablet technology!
