Sochi 2014
In 1924, Hans Surén published „Mensch und Sonne“, a book where physical exercise and nudism were combined to promote aryan racial purity ideals and aesthetics. In 2011, Sochi (Russia) prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Billboards at the building site where the Olympic media village will be display Nazi aesthetics to depict athletes (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/16/russia-winter-olympics-nazi-images). This work, Sochi 2014, is my reaction to such a horrendous marketing strategy. Nazi aesthetics does not involve only the prevalence of aryan race over others, it does also involve mass murdering, torture and cruelty. In one word - the de-humanization of humankind. Question is: what is such aesthetics doing in 21st century Olympic promotional material?
