Status

Painting, Abstract informal, Minimal, Acrylic, 420x480x142cm
‘Status ‘attempts to examine the state of painting today, and challenges the way they have been perceived.
Status, thus its scale, it’s dimensionality and through the way it engages its surrounding, performs as an altar to which viewers approach. Yet it curiously ‘droops’ and falls to the ground ‘opening’ up the painting as if to invite viewers in.
The work challenges painting’s status (which is how the title is derived) and attempts to draw one in, to experience and explore—no longer a distant object beyond comprehension. The act of ‘tearing off’ the centre section of the work also suggests how painting have ‘fallen from grace’ with many contemporary artists choosing to use a variety of other mediums over painting, or even how many paintings are done by assistants rather than by the artist themselves.
