My recent body of work has grown out of a series of paintings i did a couple of years ago while i was in London. The works proved to be difficult to resolve, hence i never went back to them until recently where i decided to cut them up!
Collage becomes a substitute of brush marks for me.I am interested in making the jumps in color, texture and shape that collage has to offer.I bring elements together which are not very companionable. They are marks, objects and symbols i have collected over time traveling from one home to the next. I like pairing unusual objects and treating them as abstract marks.I am interested how abstraction and figuration work together.I would call my paintings abstract and figurative equally.I have been very excited by De Kooning's women.
The starting point of my works is an image from catalogues that come in the mail each week.Once i trace out the outline, I discard the image and transform it.I am fascinated with contemporary fashion. I enjoying looking through catalogues, watching what people wear on the streets, night clubs or the park. I find myself walking into stores to check out what's 'new'. My works are about this funny encounter with the 'western consumerist culture'.
