RELENTLESS

In December 1989, the Romanian Revolution marked the beginning of hope for the Romanian people.

As the masses gathered in what would thereafter be known as Piata Unirii (Union Square), the flags, symbols of new beginnings and better times waved ferociously. The flags, bearing cut-out holes where the old communist coat of arms used to be, carried a home-made, long-coming message.

The hole in the fabric meant a lot more than simple stain removal. The cut-out circle talked about change and the instillment of freedom. Freedom to live, to follow dreams, to assert oneself. Freedom to create a new path.

22 years later, the hole is not yet filled. Corruption and censorship of dreams challenge the individuals' developing identities. Censorship is stalling ideals and natural development.

In the short stop motion animation I use the blue, yellow and red colors of the Romanian flag to visually expose the ongoing struggle between the artist/individual (circle) and the larger, more complex governmental mechanism (squares).
