For Franco Longo, painting remains a " home of the spirit" where melancholy and mystery still have a right tod wel. In his case, melancholy and mystery are well-defined aspects of a single form of behaviour, a single attitude that does not admit any exceptions. His melancholy is all brought together in is obstinate affirmation of artistic practice and then projected outwards in defence of a discipline- that of the artist - which despite all the ambiguities of the recent past silently continues to be proud of its own identity.
