Biography

D.F was born in 1971 in Tursi (Matera), where he lives. As a child he apporaches to art among the easels, canvases and paitbrushes of his cousin and of his primary school teacher. Their works awake in him the charm and the mystery of figurative arts. In 1977, the premature death of his beloved brother John caused him solitude and anguish. These feelings continue to emerge in his works together with his main themes: memory, the land, and the “self”. At the age of eight he took his first snapshots with his Polaroid 1000. This turned out to be the mean to amplify his iconological sensitivity. He studied law and economics at university, which departed him from his passion for arts, even if he was very close to this world thanks to a fund raising project for an humanitarian organization.
In 2009 he started a search of his “self” through the remote landscape of Basilicata. A restless and lonely spirit, Donato keeps a hidden fire in his deep silences, and he finds in his roots the only way to escape from stereotypes to join the primeval essence. His inner condition marks a change in his photography, which is away from sharp and artful images but close to photographic “es”, joing the real essence of photographic iconology.
