Obsessions
16 May 2013
Obsessions are a normal phenomenon that gets to be taken as taboo when a collective belief circulates. But I don’t even think that this is the case anymore. It is possible now to see obsessions in a very different light. And yes it is seen in a ‘light’ that is more than just a grammatical expression.
The obsession could never be what it is, if it were not seen first. It was never really a thought anyway, until it was labelled as such. This is the light in which everything is seen. And thoughts are seen. They are not seen by an independent entity because there is no actual point in infinity that is independent. This is not a matter of scientific proof. It is a matter of seeing. A seeing that is the very action of seeing which is the natural perception of life.
The obsession is the object and this object is believed to exist independently from everything else. It is thought to belong to me, another independent entity in space. Neither of these concepts, taken to be real things, have the necessary energy to sustain themselves independently from each other. The reason for this to be so, lies in seeing. It is seeing that lights up, is conscious of is the consciousness of whatever appears and disappears. And in the disappearance of things, it is seeing that remains. This shows that seeing is not of a psychological state and neither is it of an experience that has the capacity to disappear. By this is meant that it is possible to see that there is no thought present. This seeing is natural to everyone and is what needs no effort at all as it is what makes us alive. It is the intelligence that we are. An intelligence that animates, binds, infuses, expands and is equally present everywhere at once. This is the intelligence that is seeing, is experiencing what is called life. Aliveness.
Let’s get back to that obsession again. The obsession is that moment when the seeing is intensely focused on the object which is believed to be real. It is an incessant occupation of psychological activity. An activity that requires large amounts of energy to sustain itself but yet never able to sustain itself independently in time. Like a repetitive gif image, the need to rest in the seeing gets overlooked as the object. All that is happening is a looping habit of believing that the object is what is necessary in order to be free. The need for satisfaction is overlooked by the belief that the thing seen is real and can give satisfaction if only it can be consumed totally. Basically this is the root belief of the concept ‘separation’ believed to be real.
All sighting of objects that appear to give the sensation of enjoyment are obsessions to a smaller or greater extent. The need to satisfy repeating itself over and over again sometimes at very high frequencies. But never satisfies.
No form of psychological thinking will abate this for long enough. No method of mental conditioning can abstain this need for long enough, only because all phenomenon is time bound and time itself is a psychological phenomenon.
At a high frequency of obsession, the energy needed to sustain the systems need, can have hazardous effects on the environment, the body itself can break down faster. Dis-ease can take precedence. Those who know this by experience, know how an obsession can grow to such proportion so as to override the notion of destruction. Not that destruction is not useful or necessary in itself, but rather a destruction that is eccentrically decadent and psychologically degenerative.
The natural seeing is unconditional experiencing. It is that natural intelligence that is already present. The obsession takes place upon this seeing. At the root of obsession is seeing itself and in order to root out the obsession it is necessary to see the seeing. Only because seeing is knowing. Not a psychological knowing, but that knowing that is present before and beyond any thought.
That sense of being present and alive without having to think that you are, is this knowing.
While it may take an effort to stop and sense this presence, seeing itself requires no effort at all. It may appear to take effort initially, to notice seeing and to notice what the nature of seeing is. This nature is revealing. It is light, Intelligence itself on which and by which all appears and disappears. On seeing the seeing there is no thought simply because thought is not necessary for things to appear. Thought is the label given to things but it is not the things themselves.
Visual artists, it is worth to investigate the nature of seeing. The nature of experiencing because it by this nature that all art rises. It is simple and yet profound. It is your true nature.
