Interview: Antonio Haupala, painter

- Looking at your works, the thing that strikes me most deeply, your mastery of drawing, where the contours can vanish but remains a solid construction to define the forms, the figures are as if suspended between light and shadows. I find beautiful the ability to create strong suggestions, always leaving something undefined, as a hint to the eye of the observer your work. How did you discover the design? what is it for you? you have teachers? what are your favorite materials, and that subjects give special emotions?

I am self-taught in: drawing was my form of authentic expression, perhaps even before the word. I remember that at the age of 4 years, my doctor father gave me a pad of paper for recipes and told me "... toh, he draws." I was very lively and perhaps wanted to channel my energy, I began to draw horses, reminding me of the pictures from children's books, I did not stop more. Having lived on three different continents, chronologically in Asia, Europe, North America, drawing, or rather, the sketches, I was indispensable to communicate, because they do not know the various languages of these places were unknown to me. The design is part of me, it is my language, intimate suited for any kind of narrative. I do not have favorite subjects, I translate into images that listening to music, or some small everyday occurrence, some written sentence; any subject or scene that emerges is fine as long as able to communicate the soul ... everything has a soul. The materials used range from charcoal to pen, does not really matter, although I admit that for certain images some means are more effective than others ... Sometimes, I even saw a move in secret index finger, drew in empty ... I can not do anything, it's stronger than me.

- Let's talk about art exhibitions. Collective, personal, public or private galleries, HomeGallery as you use now. I confess that it is not a pleasant subject for me, so I think it's a critical time for other artists, of course, for those who do not expose compulsively. Like display your work, and in what contexts, in which rooms?

The work of artist (do not like to call myself in this way) was born by accident. Graduated in law and started out in the legal career, he painted for pleasure, giving or selling a few paintings to friends. One day he came to me a letter from a Bologna art dealer who, enthusiastic about my work, asked me to exhibit at a downtown gallery. It was a great sales success, so we arranged for subsequent deliveries. Alessandra my wife encouraged me to leave the legal profession began what in your opinion was on my way. It was a jump without a net, I had to always give the best of me if I did not "sfracellarmi". I was attracted and abandoned definitely the codes to devote full time to the oil painting; many hours of the day to study the classics, color combinations, the carvings on the frames that assemble and decorate personally. Thanks to art dealers, managed to expose a bit 'all over Italy and abroad, in private galleries and art fairs, especially Padua. With the crisis of 2008, I opened in Mantua, a personal space where I expose my works exclusively. With the closure of many galleries as a result of the crisis, my relationship with the merchants came gradually decreasing. Now, any kind of initiative in galleries, cultural associations or public bodies is taken personally by my wife, excellent manager, who handles sales and all that comes with it.

- Do you think the artist today needs as many say, be "entrepreneur of himself" and if so, what are the job prospects, which sales channels has before?

I can't have the solution for this question. I can only say that we must always improve, both on a cultural than technical work, (you never stop learning). What is certain is that, while the artist is anxious honestly in his "creation", would be a considerable advantage to have someone to look after in a professional manner for the promotion and administration of this activity: compiling invoices, transport letters, correspondence with customers, etc etc. Otherwise you run the risk that happens as happened to me at the beginning, that I came home with a box of peanuts, a new pair of boxers and some change, as compensation for a written framework. (My wife is still laughing)

- Another thing I noticed about you is the taste for good food (simple but fine), I think it's part of our way of feeling things, and then the kitchen is something creative, a little 'magical, alchemical as the color palette ... do not you think?

I love cooking!! If I wanted to eat decently at my house, I had to take the situation in hand ... my mother was a landslide! The taste has always been important to me, due to the fact that, coming from Thailand, land of strong flavors, from the most daring culinary combinations, the biggest shock of my childhood was precisely the lack of those foods. Of course, as well as to satisfy the appetite, the food also becomes nourishment for the intellect, evokes memories, distant places, but also reassuring traditions. For this aspect, the kitchen is similar to painting, with the difference that combine the aromas and flavors instead of the colors. However, it witnesses to the same result: you break down the boundaries (perhaps why my sign is a bit 'indefinite) and open small universes that I love to share with the guests at my table or with the audience at my shows.
