Although "public art" is not considered as a new concept in the lexical scope of well-known countries, these definitions have been much less attended to in interacting with our cultural community. In other words, it has been challenged in the minds and thoughts of different people in our society.
Perhaps the most important issue in this case is the effectiveness of an arts event in the community and its proper transfer that can be considered as one of the most important principles of an artistic event.
If the events take place with more unity and comprehensiveness in all classes of a community, we can hope that art occasions become more public and visual quality increases among all members of a community. Of course, this issue can cause to raise people's awareness of social values and concepts of culture and identity.
It should be noted that one of artistic events which is being administered in Iranian context is "Art in Village". It is known as one of the four-year artistic activities of Green Volume which has been administered in different parts of Iran (esp. in villages) and it is still evolving and ongoing. The Green Volume group has discovered many novel and conspicuous findings through their presence in the community and the administration of artistic programs especially visual art among volunteers throughout Iran. It can be clearly compared to "Cooperative Art" and "Public Art" which are similarly administered in other countries. It has caused its value to be promoted to a significant level beyond holding exhibitions in galleries and museums and performing arts festival which is held periodically and superficially.
The group has a very simple and clear definition of its artistic programs highlighting the potential of presenting visual art in public spaces. It has expanded its activities in the rural areas of the country and even beyond Iran's borders by establishing a bilateral interaction between the artist and the country men. Indeed, by taking into account the activities of "Art in Village" which have formed beyond the framework of classic museums, galleries, and academic environment, the group enjoys unique privileges to interact with the large group of volunteers in art and establish a reasonable and appropriate effort toward increasing their visual levels in a long-term plan, in addition to aesthetic and artistic aspects.
By considering the characteristics of "public art" and "collaborative art", the group has tried to make the most intimate relationship between an artist and the public which helps people get deeper insights when beholding artistic works. Also, one of the other plans of "Art in Village" is to make people have more access to artistic places and meet their financial needs so that the group could have got significant success in making public the plans.
Needless to say, it has not been possible to make public artistic trends in the community as much as they deserve and it is not beyond the reality that the group working in the "art in a village" project has faced many problems due to its limited capability to provide conditions and supply all costs. In this regard, the group always welcomes supporters and interested people and embraces all their comments and suggestions.
"Art in Village", itself, is a stimulating artistic movement established cooperatively by nominated visual artistes in Iran and it could have made marked effects on the community where is a proper context to present the artistic works. It has also provided conditions to transfer the significant consequences to prospective generations of the community.
By performing "Art in Village" project, "Green Volume" group has helped part of rural communities approach the visual maturity, along with a growing sense of exhilaration. The reason lies in the fact that it intends to remind the local people of their own discoveries in knowing their ethnic roots, inventing artifacts, reinforcing their beliefs, and reaching a better understanding of their own community. It is believed that raising the local people's awareness can help them realize their social values and know their original identity. Also, a series of discoveries in practical research activities of the artists is considered as a supportive heritage which can revive the roots of ritual identity. Indeed, what is happening between people and artists is a mutual relationship and interaction which can be beneficial for both sides.
Practical arts programs in the village create a very special feeling between the two spectra (visual artists-people) which can be considered as an inherent theme to the program.
"Art in Village" is generally regarded as an artistic project which struggles to make a cultural relationship with different social classes in the community although it has already received less attention. In addition, it tries to make a mutual relationship between visual artists and people which results in creating an artistic work including both artists and local people's mutual cooperation.
