The Exhibition
This work was born out of a small pond on Jersey in the Channel Islands. To become obsessed with any object is to invest it with a myriad of mythical possibilities.
Leonardo da Vinci used to tell his pupils that if you wish to paint the most sublime mountainous backgrounds, then you must lay awake at night and stare at the wall that your cot is placed next to and very soon, the rough texture of the wall will transpose itself into the most marvellous of mountain ranges, swooping and ascending before your very eyes.
I stared at the pond until the waters danced before my eyes. My brain burst with the colours green. Then when the autumn arrived my senses were assailed by the gold, tinged rays of the sun. The pond became “like Aurum Verde the green living gold of the Alchemist” (Paolo Guidi, 2008)
