Artist Ali Zülfikar is creating a joint project by Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ and Osman Kavala, who have long been held as political hostages by the Turkish government. The artwork will be shown as an original in an exhibition taking place from August 4th to 19th at Galerie Am Brusselplatz in Cologne and will also be on view at Cologne's Bilboord area from August 2nd to 11th.
He explained to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe that he had decided to draw such an artwork to support a public debate on "immediate release" under the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) decision. An infringement procedure against Turkey, as the Council of Europe has already initiated for Osman Kavala, would also be possible for S. Demirtaş and F. Yüksekdağ.
In 2022 he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
A STRONG WORK OF ART
"The work of art has many facets," says Ali Zülfikar: When you look at the art work, Figen Yüksekdağ's eyes filter the powerful statement of their conversation, next to this you can see a demo scene in a film tape in Gezipark in Istanbul and in the eyes of Osman Kavala you can see the smiling face of Demirtaş reflected, like a flood of light which is penetrating the prison bars. The project is supported by non-governmental organizations and individuals to contribute to freedom, justice and social peace.
