Statement
Glass tubes filled with white light are vainly strapped to the surface of old well-trodden wooden ladders. These new illuminated paths reach upwards as varying man-made acts of faith alien against their surroundings. A string ensemble play as the vertical pathways disappear one by one.
A series of old wooden A-frame ladders, varying in height and adorned with white neon glass tubes, will be installed as a cluster. A sonic and musical presence will be centred on the haunting Cantus In Memorium Benjamin Britten by the Estonian composer Arvo Part. This will be performed by a string ensemble with a distant percussionist enhanced by real-time spectral processing. At dusk an ambient soundscape will gradually become audible from around the light installation and from which a performance of the Cantus will then emerge. This action will signal the beginning of the performance, lasting approximately 7 minutes.
The artist will turn off the power to each light covered ladder as the music continues until one ladder remains lit but ultimately is switched off as the final sounds of the string ensemble fades back into a vestige of the original ambient presence and then into the evening air.
