Alessandro Mendini – Proust Histoire (1976 – 2010) is the first event of an exhibition project conceived and curated for the SACI Gallery by architect and SACI President’s Council member Dr. Laura Villani. The exhibition investigates design and its multiple variations, as evidenced through presentation of a singular art object - an armchair designed by the renowned Milanese architect and designer Alessandro Mendini.

Descriptive panels illustrate the genesis and development of the project, its philosophical implications, and the historical stages that led to the design of this cult object which links design, fashion, and art. The exhibition is held contemporaneously with Pitti Uomo. The artist will be present during the reception which is open to the city of Florence (Monday, January 11, 7:30 pm) and will run through January 20.

In 1999, with the approval of the Ministero dei Beni Culturali, SACI acquired the Palazzo dei Cartelloni (on via Sant’Antonino 11) in Florence where the main facility of the school is located. Beginning in January 2010, the Design area will be moved to SACI's newly acquired building at Via Sant’Egidio 14, the SACI Jules Maidoff Palazzo for the Visual Arts.

In its gallery spaces, SACI hosts art exhibitions by national and international artists, which are open to the public and free of charge, that are intended to reinforce SACI's strong bond with the city of Florence. This goal is also advanced through the community services undertaken by SACI students, which include numerous projects such as painting murals in hospital facilities and restoring archaeological artifacts and artworks.
