Circus Day was once a popular holiday celebrated by the entire community. During the Golden Age of the American circus (1870-1950) schools closed, factories shut down, and farmers left their fields all to attend the daylong spectacle.
It began early in the morning when the first circus trains started rolling into town and lasted until the final railroad car pulled out of the station well after midnight. Throughout the day crowds gathered to watch the show’s every move from unloading the trains, to setting up the tent city, to parading through the streets and finally culminating with the final evening performance.
