THE SHOW

The show will be displaying twenty square-shaped paintings on canvas from the artist’s recent production up to his latest dated 2010. These works embody the evolution in the artist’s pictorial language. Through his experience, and faithful to contemporary visual exploration, he reaches his maturity focusing his attention on the theoretical dilemma of reconciling abstraction and anti-naturalism with figurativism, a quest in which color plays a key role.

“Often known as a painter of skies, Simonetti can also be defined at the same time as a painter of the earth: on the one hand, Daedalus, who makes wings for Icarus to challenge the heights of the sky and infinity; on the other, a speleologist or, better yet, a rhabdomancer who casts his stick in the search for depth, for an abyss, a source of life to be found in the midst of desert-like scenarios almost like a sort of day-after.
[…] under the prevailing abstract grammar of his language, Simonetti disguises a sublimed figuration, the creation of landscapes of unknown places, revealing it only in some cases and drafting with sparse traces a fantastical tale, the scenery for a mise –en- scène, which anyone can write, work out, invent and tell”.
