This artistic expression was born in the late nineteenth century with Stephane Mallarmé, who had the idea of R03;R03;a 'book essential'.
With the futurism of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the book becomes the body and form, and continues to evolve even in mainstream art born in the early twentieth century, such as Cubism, Surrealism, Expressionism, etc. ..
Dieter Rot writes about the metamorphosis of the book: "... So the book opens all the features of the expression, and someone turns him into noble materials or poor, or in other forms of hands or faces, and those who do vegetate or grow on a human or identifies the mystery of cosmic circularity closing in two backs. "
The artists can not conceive any form of visual and spatial possibilities of the book. Anne Moeglin-Delcroix note: "the page becomes concrete space in which the arrangement and shape of words reward the meaning of the text ... So the whole poem becomes an image, the concrete image that explores the potentialities of the language printed plastic ".
Bruno Munari can be described as the father of the Italian artist's book. Public in 1942 by Einaudi 'machines Munari' to be followed by many others, experimentation with materials and timeless. Known is his 'Book Unreadable'.
The early sixties, however, saw the birth of the artist's book, when art becomes contemplation, emotional and social impact, where even the gesture, body, film, photography, blood and sweat become instruments creative and artistic.
The Fluxus movement, born in 1962, has contributed greatly to the growth and development of the artist's book, where art has represented more than reality, but it is completely immersed in the reality.
The practice of the artist's book is an important element that has involved all the trends of art: painting, sculpture, behavior, photography, abstraction, minimalism, trans etc. .. The younger generation of artists interact with the pages of the book as an opportunity to expand further their artistic message.
