HABITAT, the recomposition
Critical texts, Italy, Firenze, Certaldo, 13 February 2016
Recompose means putting the fragments together in order to get back to a single entity, it means creating cohesive union among the fragments to rebuild and recreate a form from what was separated, and it means using both tools and new research. Looking for the right cohesion and unity to recreate the optimum interlocking of the blocks is something which involves the exploration of all possibilities and the courage to experiment. Reconstruction of new ways of interaction also means healing different relationships. Gloria Campriani's exhibition, HABITAT, recomposing - that is housed in the historic Palazzo Pretorio in Certaldo, introduces the concepts of environment and social recomposition, going through a process that includes some of the most important works of the artist – focusing mainly on the idea of the need to find new ways, through union and confrontation, to reconstruct a new habitat able to contrast an ever more rigid society, with closed-minds and individualism. Therefore the habitat to be reconstructed is the image that conveys the concept of a wider environment, an environment whose fragments are reunited to find again the integrity through memory, culture, but also the experimentation, cooperation and research.

In kintsugi, a Japanese technique, fragments of ceramic pottery are reunited using gold or silver to emphasize that from chaos a better and nicer item might come to life, the recomposition has to be implemented so as not to forget that the fracture being reassembled, using tools and new research might be an enrichment as well as a necessity. Looking for the right cohesion and unity to recreate the optimum interlocking of the pieces is in fact an action which involves the exploration of all possible alternatives and courage of experimentation, to find new ways forward for a more aware contemporary society, to create a new shared "habitat ". The concept of recomposition is one of the focal points of Gloria Campriani's work, carried out over the years by relentless experimentation and research in the field of fiber art and in the continuing transformation of her works, starting from recycled materials to create a new reality through the ability to risk and experiment, between ephemeral and material.

The artist uses the thread as a symbol of her identity and as a means to unite, paying attention to gestures and to the development of the project to achieve the desired result, with no interest in the tool itself, that makes her a true conceptual artist. Hence, her work is eclectic and uses different mediums, from paintings, installations, videos and performances, focuses on the concept by constantly experimenting and researching new possibilities opening up in the present-day. In particular, it focuses on issues related to sociology and social psychology, such as reflecting on the meaning of common good and the new trends of social interaction.

On the inauguration day, the journey through the exhibition will be introduced in collaboration with some graduate students from the University of Siena, who will make the audience participate in a reflection on the concepts and issues related to the contemporary world, always based on the artist’s thoughts: an experimentation that is a new way to see a presentation, looking at an exhibition that enriches us bringing new representations of reality with expressive methods, different one from another. There will be speeches by performance artists asked to express their views and share issues related to the event in different ways.
