It opens Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 18.00, in the historic halls of the former convent of Montevergini, the current Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art of the City of Syracuse, the exhibition The Veil of Maya Paola Marzano, by Lorenzo Canova .
The event is sponsored by: City of Syracuse - Department of Cultural Affairs, Norman Academy, with the support of South EcoControl.

On show 12 works including 8 oil on panel, 4 digital printing and a site specific installation.

Presenting the exhibition catalog writes Lorenzo Canova: "What is concealed in the empty spaces of roads and piazzas reminiscent of Rome, but which might be Babylon, Damascus, or Diomira, Isidora and Dorotea? What lies hidden behind the secret of their construction, their arrangement, the web of buildings and avenues?...Could it be that these places conceal the arcanum of the true form and true name, magical and fated, of the city which many gods desired to be eternal, so it could be destroyed and reborn countless times? Is what surrounds us real, or merely that illusion which gives shape to a vision which, in diverse but continuous guises, runs from the Indian Upanishads to Plato, to Schopenhauer, the novels of Philip K. Dick and the saga of the film Matrix?...

...The entire project is based around research on architecture, on monumental and urban space, to which the artist has long applied herself with dedication and rigour. Aware of the difficulties of her task, Paola Marzano thus employs different tools of representation, in an approach balanced between the physicality of painting and the immateriality of digital technologies, up to the tangible (but fleeting) materiality of the installation. ...

...Painting is dissolved and recomposed in the shimmering of a digital light which falls over the architectures, sectioning them accurately to punctuate their indiscernible relationship with the shadows extending outwards from the focal point of the transcendental splendour that irradiates from the centre of the whole composition. ...

...This journey finds completion in the installation concluding the exhibition where finally, in the artist’s project, “noumenic” reality is released from the prison of the “phenomenon”, from the veil of Māyā and the gaol of the samsāra. Passing through the veil placed at the entrance, viewers thus find themselves faced with the symbolic presence of conical lances (signs of the energy generating the universe and the power enclosed in the immobile and impending force of wisdom) and a snakeskin, a symbol of renewal and perhaps an allusion to cyclical time, to the atemporality of the eternal and to contact beyond the screen of fiction projected by earthly reality. Through art the contingent “phenomenon” is thus overcome to reveal a “face to face” vision, the unknown region located beyond the uncertain and falsifying mirror of the world."
