EX and MATTEO FIENO
Beautiful, like women. Painted in the imagination, drawn with the heart. They illuminate the transience of life, made up of atoms. Minute bubbles of matter. As Epicurus supposed, explaining the art of thinking and, to posterity, how the intellect could fly. Thanks to the imagination. To that non-place in which to let oneself be transported to the intimacy of two artists, whose creative path follows different but parallel paths. If shared by the need to give voice to a strong feeling. Matteo Fieno, Piedmontese, born in 1981 and a fervent creative activity that generates, in a limited time, a strong exposure assisted by two previous personal exhibitions, by participation in various group exhibitions, and by a strong consensus, national and not only, of critics and public, sealed by the attention of the well-known critic Vittorio Sgarbi. He paints the woman, the hymn to grace. Their bodies, expressions of nuanced movements, which expand the emotional space of the observer. A gentle combination structured by design. Which prevails over color, whether it is delicate or bright. And transversal interventions in the technique: with pens, pastels, charcoals and watercolors, if on paper, with oils and acrylics, preferred on cotton canvas. Different pigments, dispensed with fluid contamination, overwhelmed by the creative impulse, whose human imperfection willingly enriches the paintings with traces. To follow, The foundation of a poetics in which the imperfect is life. And the body is the means to identify with it, fixing the very moment in which it happens. Not stolen but given away. As well as spontaneous, as only a child's gaze can be.
A scientific approach guides the research of 'EX', at the time Massimiliano Baccanti, a graphic designer from Bologna, who finds the most genuine and personal expression of art in painting and resins. Monochrome and non-monochrome surfaces. Guest surfaces of 'basic and archaic forms' in the artist's words. Simple, in appearance. On a closer look, they are custodians and guarantors of rigid rules whose uniformity is nothing but synthesis, but foam. Epoxy resins, capable of fixing the fluidity of color through their transparent nature. Made of bubbles, like the waves of the sea, smooth and flat from above but rich and complex in detail. Like space and time, binaries whose distinction is lost, if viewed in the homonymous dimension and more generally: the same rules, for the small as for the large. EX thus ranges from the tribute to entropy, in the 'Kosmos' series, to the brilliant lines of 'Bright Stripes', parallel or converging but never random. Ad 'Introspection', an intimate culmination and banner of the minimal where the essentiality of the forms is combined with the substantial monochrome, both expressions of the artist's vibrant feeling and, I dare, synonymous with intellectual coherence.
