AS A DEDICATION TO THE ARTIST WHEN HE WAS YOUNG First StAtion
An Art project by Flavio Sciolé
The instAllation is related to the figure of the young artist, which has often been turned into a myth, too many times exploited.
Going into a room, we realize to be in a bedroom. We find a camp bed and a night table inwards.
An open notebook lies on the table, we’ll find out later what is written on it. On the wall there are two handwritings: artist life vandal life /destroy art. Looking above us we find out a hanged body/dummy. The wish is to show the condition of the young artist, who is exploited, despised, derided, never helped. They let him die in his own rigorousness and he is accepted only if he decides to surrender sell out. In this case we find him with a slip-knot around his neck, he committed suicide. In this way his action becomes an accusation act against people who stay alive and against people who will try to exploit him after his death. A revenge against centuries of obscurantism when only resignation allows you to exist, in desisting. People who, vice versa, fights everyday against compromise, are put aside, avoided. The action of the young artist explicates itself beyond killing himself, also when he lets on his notebook’s pages his way of thinking which lays down the hypothesis to use it post mortem.
Flavio Sciolè
Text of the notebook (excerpts):
Now you are going to make me a martyr
Goodbye, My Art, carry me away!
This is not a suicide, but an Art Action.
God Never
Textual Criticism by Laura Coppa
M.D.A. is dead
The body of the young artist has been found strung up a beam of his house. Every work of art is terribly fragile, the action to make it is terribly fragile. The word which tries to translate it, or which-silently-omit or hide it, is terribly fragile. A life which cements its majestic success, its disastrous defeat or irreparable surrender on the cornerstones of art is an unstable manufacture: giving life up to repudiate art.
Youth which makes Art its only reason for being is fragile as a bud. Art, the real one, is not really anywhere. It needs ideal “bearers”, it needs filters which are suitable for making it appropriately material. As each God exists on earth since he is led by preachers, Art reigns, divulged by its apostles or -as in this case- martyrs.
Victims of persecution, derided and made crazy by incomprehension of people who are made deaf and blind by obscurantism.
Unwise villagers, their to-the-extreme thoughtless action makes it a relic to be commercialized at a great cost.
A young person who is enslaved and made surge by Art is fragile as a bud.
And, at the end, Art callously kidnaps that marginalized and dissatisfied youth, with no chance for redemption.
An unheard life and a celebrated death: sold at a low price, in small pieces like small stones of a wall or like corners of a gauze which are stained by blood from stigmates.
The installation by Flavio Sciolè is not a statement: it is an accusation.
It accuses coward killers of ideas whose intellectual immobility, which is put away in boxes filled with scrap iron, sealed by bright ribbons of arid new-phobia, causes the desertification of the more flourishing creativity.
Fragile Martyrs of Art.
Flavio Sciolé tells us it: he’s one of the most famous atheistic no-artists.
Now you are going to make me a martyr
When I was alive you didn’t even greet me, now you all know me.
Art for Art.
Goodbye, My Art, carry me away!
This is not a suicide, but an Art Action.
God Never
He tells it with a “no-action” (the death) of no-art (death again) of a “no martyr” (suicide).
The greatest and more popular artists are all dead, or sold out.
