PRESS RELEASE

Saturday, September 1, 2012, at 6pm, the Villicana D’Annibale Galleria D’Arte of via Cavour (Arezzo) will inaugurate the exhibit of painting and sculpture of Vincenzo Calli and Susan Leyland, entitled Forms and Perfumes of Tuscany. The exhibition, curated by the Californian gallerist and artist Danielle Villicana D’Annibale, will host a selection of works by the Aretine painter and English sculptress. The exhibit will continue, at free entrance, until Wednesday, September 12, 2012.
Forms and Perfumes of Tuscany is an event organized by the Aretine gallery to celebrate the September edition of the Giostra del Saracino.

Vincenzo Calli and Susan Leyland are two artists of international fame. With great pleasure and honor, the Villicana D’Annibale Art Gallery presents them together for the exhibit Forms and Perfumes of Tuscany, a prestigious event for the city of Arezzo.

Vincenzo Calli is a painter whom for years has been at the summit of figurative Tuscan contemporary art.
The sophistication and refinement of his paintings evoke the intoxicating perfumes of the love for life. His grandiose canvases restore to the spectator the dreams of adolescence and the most beautiful moments of existence. Young couples in their prime of life, buxom women with a simple but spectacular charm, are a few of the elements found in a high end Renaissance painting, reinterpreted in a contemporary flare.
A style influenced by that of figurative painter Balthus? Surely yes, but the images of Calli speak a personal and distinctive language of their own, with compositions which contain an interior dynamism and an intimate harmony. Literally “pure beauty,” known in Italy as “bellezza pura.”
It is not a coincidence that critic Vittorio Sgarbi included the Aretine artist on the list of ninety-nine artists present in his book I giudizi di Sgarbi (The Opinions of Sgarbi) in 2005. It is also not a coincidence that Calli has roused approval for decades in Italy as well as abroad.

Susan Leyland is a sculptress whose works of art take your breath away for the splendor and gracefulness which they are able to express.
Who loves horses and the equestrian world couldn’t possibly not appreciate her sculptures created with delicacy and originality. The elitist forms of one of the animals most connected to man since time immemorial, are accomplished by the English artist with such elegance and master that the maestri of the Tuscan Renaissance including Verrocchio and Donatello, as well as the noted English equestrian artist of the 18th century, George Stubbs, would all applaud.
The sculpture of Leyland is in continuous evolution. Her objective is to propose solutions intended to innovate interpretations of the horse in art. Each work of art halts, as if in an instance, a specific state of mind or a recognizable circumstance.
The destiny of the English artist has also intersected with that of Vittorio Sgarbi. In fact, she was selected by him for the 54° Edition of the Biennale of Venice, held from December 17, 2011 to January 30, 2012 in Turin.

Brief biography Vincenzo Calli
Vincenzo Calli was born in 1953 in Anghiari (AR). After graduating from the Istitute of Art of Sansepolcro, he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze (Academy of Fine Arts) of Florence. At the early age of twenty-one he held his first exhibit.
In 1984 he becomes known in the United States, exhibiting at the World’s Fair Exposition of New Orleans. In 1986 he was awarded the prize Arte 86 of the art magazine Mondadori for painting. In 1993 he was invited to exhibit at the historical Bemheim-Jeune Gallery of Paris. The catalogue of the exhibit was presented by critic Roger Bouillot and the writer Alberto Bevilacqua. In 1997 he returns to the United States, where he exhibits in the Camino Real Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida.
Over the years, Calli alternated solo exhibitions in prestigious galleries all over the world as well as in his homeland of Tuscany, for example the exhibition of 2004 at the Inghirami Palace in Sansepolcro or the exhibit three years later in his hometown of Anghiari, at Taglieschi Palace.
In 2009 he exhibited in Canada, at the Art Gallery of Calgary and at the Loch Gallery of Toronto. He was also present at the Toronto International Art Fair. In 2010 he held an exhibit at the Atrium of Honor (Atrio d’Onore) of the Province of Arezzo and in 2011 at the Museum of Dante Alighieri in Florence.

Brief biography Susan Leyland
Susan Leyland was born in 1952 in Great Britain, in Whiston (Lancashire). She lived in the north of England until her family moved near Cambridge. Profoundly connected to Scotland, from an early age she loved sports, art, languages and the equestrian world, the latter a passion which her grandfather, a veterinarian and breeder of ponies, conveyed to her. In 1973 she moved to Italy, to city of Florence. She worked in the fashion industry for a few years, as well as an English teacher and horse instructor. In the meantime, she grew towards the world of sculpture and learned the antique techniques of working with clay in the Impruneta tradition. In 1998 she had her first exhibit, and in 2000, cheered on by the public and critics, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to art, combining together her two greatest loves: horses and sculptures. The works by Leyland are modeled principally in clay of different colors, but in recent years the sculptress has approached bronze as well, a material with which the research for the forms and the anatomy of the horse can push her art to an even higher level. Her works represent equine figures which emerge from blocks or geometrical bases which she calls “Horse Block Sculptures.”
In November, the sculptures of the English artist may be admired at the Marino Marini Museum of Pistoia.
