ANDREA BENETTI - SIGNUM CRUCIS
Exhibitions, Italy, Bologna, 29 January 2016
The exhibition "Signum Crucis" was born thanks to the first work entitled "Tribute to Karol Wojtyla," that I realized in 2009 as a tribute to the great figure of Pope John Paul II, to which I am particularly attached.
On that paints a picture of a cross, it was donated in 2012 to Pope Benedict XVI by ANFE (National Association of Migrant Families), during the meeting between the Pope and a delegation of the Association, which in 2012 celebrated the 65th anniversary of the birth.

In the years following the donation of the painting to His Holiness, I had repeatedly promised to build another twelve canvases to create a show that had as its subject the Cross. Today this wish has become a reality. The twelve works of the exhibition Signum Crucis follow the stylistic choice of the original painting that inspired them, he sees the cross inserted in a context of abstract forms, often brightly colored, showing a message of hope expressed by the sacred symbol of Christianity. Through these colorful shapes that convey a deep joy, I have tried to interpret the concept of resurrection and salvation, that our Lord has given to humanity through his sacrifice, the meaning of which has been kept until today its symbol Cross.

Too often contemporary artists have vilified this and other sacred symbols of the Christian religion, to obtain an ephemeral and despicable advertising. These ways of acting are light years away from the concept of art, because for me art is above all a message of love and peace, which expresses respect for the human being and for what he believes it. It can not be considered art any expression, that insult or vilify the symbols of a faith, whatever it is.

Returning to the subject of the Cross, I find very wrong and unfair that today would deny in some places the presence of this symbol, regardless of its religious significance, for two thousand years is rooted in our culture and an integral part of our tradition, regardless from the religious path, each of us has made.
My view is, if anything, to enrich society with other cultures, in the obvious freedom of worship and certainly not to deny the Christian roots, which for thousands of years are our history.

Those set out above are the reasons that led me to develop this art project, with the aim of highlighting the message full of love, joy and hope, which is endemic to the Sign of the Cross (Signum Crucis).
