Here's a short description on what they do and on how they operate. Sounds like absolute fun and I'm thrilled to have received an invitation from them :-)
After Falk Miksa Art Street and Buda Castle of Budapest, Art Gallery Ferdinand has now set up its new location, the Kazi30, in the Kazinczy Street, in the fledging cultural center of Budapest buzzing with ruin pubs and legendary “Pest culture.” As the choice of location already suggests, our purpose is to provide opportunities to talented (not just “underground”, but definitely not “main line”) visual artists, who by not being part of the structure, have not been given sufficient space and opportunity .
“Budapest is starting to steal the cool from Berlin right now” CNN's “Top spots for 2013 in Europe” reported, and as far as we are concerned, this should manifest in the area of visual arts as well, where talented artists can present themselves and interact with their public very similarly to their fellow bohemians, the dancers, the actors and the musicians. And while we will not give concerts, fresh coffee will be available (as well as music, too, because, a lack of music makes us similarly incapable of intelligent activity as a lack of coffee does.)
In essence, the difference between a community space / open studio and the prestige art galleries of the establishment (employing the same artists and exhibiting the same works of art over and over) is that our artists will take an active part in the gallery's actual everyday activities, as they will also have the possibility to use the studio for the creation their own art. Further, they can physically take part in setting up the shows. If it so happens, the artists and strangers walking in on them will have a chance to have a conversation with each other over a cup of coffee. The open studio will also potentially be a place for art education and guidance, for those interested in receiving such.
