His passionate glance
by RossoSegnale/3001LAB
For the first time, RossoSegnale/3001 LAB artistic spa- ce has the opportunity to meet an author - although not contemporary - nonetheless, according to our opinion, very modern, witness of one of the most rich and happy periods of the Italian painting. Together with the wor- ks of his famous friends (Sironi, De Chirico, Severini, Carra, Tozzi, Campigli, Modigliani, Jacob, Utrillo) with whom he had close friendship and artistic relations - first in Paris then in Milan - Colognese’s works are cer- tainly not second in quality and artistic ability within a society crossed by great excitement throughout the Great Century, just ended. Thanks to the works made available by his family that have allowed the realization of this art exhibition and a perfect synchronism with the recent rediscovery of works made on paper (see the amazing success of the first edition of the Lugano International Fair dedicated to works on paper - wopart. eu -) Gianni Colognese’s drawing notebook sketches, paper studies (often made by fast strokes, may be done on the back of a restaurant’s menu or a cigarettes’ pack) are shown for the first time to the public. Why Gianni Colognese at RossoSegnale? Because, theoretically, it could have been possible to see Gianni Colognese get on his race bicycle, out of this old house dating back to 1911, familiar to him, to reach the “bassa” or some “roggia”???, with his inquisitive, poetic spirit, to trace the path of a lonely work. Or find him sitting in an ar- mchair drinking brandy in the bow window, contem- plating the garden, to catch with quick, precise strokes on his inseparable block-note the more intimate, lone atmosphere of the fading light of the changing seasons. A romantic vision, made of delicate puffs, country light scents, smoky and intense odours of Parisian clubs, strong perfumes of Milan neighborhood, spicy eau de cologne of circus characters or voluptuous feminine fragrances, “overflows” in a particularly happy manner from drawings and sketches shown in this exhibition. Critics of that time shows the deepest meaning of this great artist’s work, forgotten because of the whirlwind of the contemporary art’s languages; that extraordinary sense which was fruit of his work’s loneliness, true and tangible witness of his artistic essence, to which he ne- edn’t bend and bow to promot himself: “... arm in arm with him and with his gentle tenderness as painter, in front of one of his painting, the city-man walks through a small far-away world, very close to us, but of which his painting gives us the sweet whispered revelation.” For these reasons, with great pride, we here re-introduce you Gianni Colognese’s works.
