THRESHOLDS consists of a selection of artworks which, through the different techniques and expressive modalities of each one of the three authors, can be perceived as thresholds, passages which look on other worlds, windows which open gazes on different dimensions, visions which bring to surface subtle vibrations, otherwise concealed.
Luisa Mazza exhibites on this occasion for the first time in the Netherlands. For the realization of her wall pieces, sculptures and installations she employs candid monochromes and transparent, crystalline and reflective materials such as glass, plexiglass, steel and various plastics; she combines them in unusual matchings by declining their different communicative potentials: through the definite use of typologies and finishings the artist constructs, from the smallest intervention to that on large scale, a silent, clear, pure and aerial universe, a suspended world between earth and sky which seems ethereal and fragile and simultaneously unassailable and incorruptible, as ruled by inaccessible and underlying laws and dynamics. Plastic, geometric, mental and abstract forms, together with more organic, open and evolving ones, build worlds of harmoniously coordinated relations, marked by an underlying modular rhythm; on exhibition six pieces of the series "Neosfere”, “Neospheres".
Ellen Schippers makes use of video, photography, performance, installation, construction of sculpture-dresses: the artist primarily refers to the female figure to investigate the relationship between the appearance, the exterior image that everyone shows of him/herself and the original authenticity; she manages, with extreme delicacy and incisiveness, to show us the inalienable and most authentic emotional life hidden in the human soul. On display, from the series "Snow White", "Sherazade" and "Lost in Transition", a selection of ten photos and two "triptych pieces", unusual works which join photography and video to compose a sort of contemporary tabernacle. Here the "threshold" element, placed in the foreground, is a veiled border which impassable arises between the observer and the evanescent appearances of the character, who seems to dwell, as for a spell, beyond the diaphragm, a throbbing and organic membrane, perhaps comparable to the cocoon of a butterfly. This pictorial, magnetic and absorbing image of the psyche looks like being in search for a contact with the outside world; she, through veils, reveals herself, whilst intensely waiting that the viewer's gaze meets her.
Christian Zanotto conducts from years a unique research which combines a classical vision of art making with technological media: through the peculiar operating mode of the artist the computer screen becomes threshold to explore unplaceable digital worlds and to realize virtual sculptures, videos and holographic installations which interconnect the viewer with an intangible and ubiquitous sphere. The black crystals on which Christian Zanotto materializes the images of the complex figures, shaped through the joint use of various 3D programs, in the same way as reflecting altarpieces by the multiple glares, open out like doors through which the evoked hieratic entities show themselves; the powerful and mysterious appearances, with elegant and refined guises of precious metallic colors, all belong to the same universe and relate to each other as the ideograms of an impenetrable symbolic alphabet, machines of a sophisticated visual and compositional apparatus. On exhibition three artworks on crystal, including the two unedited pieces "Gabriel # 1" and "Gabriel # 2" and the holographic theca "Apnea"
