The project "Fight against maternal and infant mortality" in Afghanistan is the main theme of the fifth edition of “il sorriso di Roberta per l’UNICEF"

The event will be held in Milazzo (ME) on days that are 24 to 27 May 2013, reached its fifth year of life, to help the world's poorest children through UNICEF, and at the same time keeping alive the memory of Roberta Smedili death at the age of 23 years for an aneurysm aorta.

This edition like its predecessors will be housed in the glass room Paladiana of the Municipality of Milazzo.

DETAILS OF THE PROJECT:

II protracted conflict and its aftermath in Afghanistan have produced one of the worst situations for children and women.

The country has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world, 1,600 mothers die for every 100,000.

Due to lack of transport and the absence of roads, to reach the few existing hospitals and clinics is difficult.

This, combined with the lack of obstetricians and midwives, in a country where traditions often prevent women from being examined by a male physician, means that in rural areas of Afghanistan 9 of 10 women give birth at home without the help midwives and prepared without the possibility of admission to hospital.

Infant mortality is also very high, 134 children per thousand die in the first year, 199 thousand before the age of 5 years.

The main causes of infant mortality are neonatal complications, measles, diarrhea, acute respiratory diseases, malaria and malnutrition.

Of 1,000 children born, 51 die before age 5 from diarrheal diseases, 54% of children are chronically malnourished, 40% are underweight, 71% of children and 65% of pregnant women suffer from iron deficiency anemia .

UNICEF is promoting an "integrated package of community-based services" in 4 provinces of Afghanistan: Daikundi, Badghis and Nimroz Nooristan, which are the most deficient services.

The package provides health care, nutrition and basic hygiene, tested and proven effective for a continuum of care, from neonatal period to infancy, adolescence, pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Daikundi is the province where the project will be supported with donor funds Italians, has 477,544 inhabitants, scattered over a mountainous area with little access to clean water and electricity, bad roads.

The coverage of health services is very low because of the difficulty of achieving them, because the same medical facilities are few and inadequate.

Daikundi is divided into 9 districts, 5 of which (Miramour, Khidre, Mnili, Kiti, and Sang Takht, with a total population of 218.214 people) the project has been operating since 2011 and will be extended to two more districts in 2012 and the last two in 2013.

In total, the province has 39 public medical clinics and 226 village, each of which has two community health workers, a man and a woman, dealing with health education and preventive medicine to provide some basis for about 100 families.

Every health worker identifies 10 influential women in the local community, each of which will follow 10 families, these women form a "family health action group" that works in health and nutrition of families.

The project aims to provide them with technical support, financial and medical supplies, as well as the training necessary to provide "integrated package of community-based services" to the people of the province of Daikundi, giving priority to those living in remote areas that currently have limited access or have no access to basic sanitation.

Will set up a group exhibition that will directly involve all the participating artists, who will give them a painting that will be sold with a minimum bid, far below the real value of the painting, to allow collectors, art lovers and individuals , attended the event, to win, one of the works in the catalog, definitely of great value.

All proceeds will finance the project "Fight against maternal and infant mortality" in Afghanistan that the Provincial Committee of UNICEF and the Association Roberta Messina Smedili have adopted for their activities for the year 2013.
