Matthew Sibley: Artist’s statement
The inspiration of the human form in the language of figurative sculpture
I see the human figure as integral to sculpture as a metaphorical projection for our emotions and experiences. The human form can be adapted to become a totemic figure, symbolizing in my work both pilgrim and idol, depending on the viewer. I am inspired by the figurative work of many fine African sculptors. Their view of an object as symbolic, imbued with spirituality and meaning makes such figures powerful and resonant. My work refers to this particular tradition of figurative sculpture.
For me the human form creates the parameters for me to work within providing focus and discipline which I have learnt and believe to be a strength. I have come to align this with my interest in Greek mythology, to provide a humanistic element to the work, providing a narrative about the human experience.
The sculptures I make might be viewed with trust, reverence or superstition; whichever their impact is shaped by the experiences the viewer brings to them.
