Biografia
This project sprang from a lack of fulfillment with the “straight” portrait; trying to capture the essence or “aura” of a human being with a single frozen moment. For my “Multi-Portraits,” I wanted to depict my subjects in all their complexity while still constricting their visage within one rectangular frame. During the photo shoot, the subjects had a large degree of control over their gestures, expressions and general appearance. However once the raw photos were captured, they had to relinquish the power to control their image, leaving me to build the final portrait as I saw fit. I sought to create a method in which I could digitally build a portrait, rather than simply “taking” the one that was presented to me. The straight photographs only served as the raw materials for the abstracted, frankensteinian creations.
