In my work I am experimenting with the nature of the painting material, specifically with the weave of the canvas, in an attempt to explore and re-distribute non-actualised already-contained potentials on what is traditionally taken to be the condition for painting, namely the canvas as the surface that receives an image on itself. The latter, as a manifesting physical condition for the painting, by being re-weaved, unpicked and sculpturally approached and transformed, has the potential to rearrange the positions and become dominant; the painting’s object-ness over its image-ness is highlighted, while still remaining in the framework of being a painting.
Research Outline (Philosophical Framework)
My research focuses on the notion of the event-encounter in regard to the creative process and its potential to break free from representational thinking (i.e. good and common sense) and move towards the logic of sense. This is a shifting nomadic kind of ground that allows for pure difference to be the condition for the formation of radically emerging new identities instead of subordinating difference to already configured concepts, identities and subjects.
My research takes as the point of departure the canvas of the painting as what is taken to be the condition for painting, namely a surface that receives an image and under the theoretical framework of Deleuze’s concepts, investigates how by re-thinking and manipulating this or any condition, ‘new’ potentials emerge. At the same time, the artistic process and experimentation as the event of an encounter and a moment of trembling is what allows for this re-distribution of pre-individual, impersonal and non-conceptual singularities that form series that converge or diverge forming different realised worlds. The result of this process – the artwork – and art in general is eventually the generator and the object of an encounter; it is formed out of rhizomatic connections/multiplicities and forms temporal rhizomatic connections with the viewer resulting to the emergence of a new nomadic kind of pure thinking based on a different kind of logic which is based on senses.
