Biography

My art practice is informed by 19th and early 20th century landscape symbolism painting from Northern Europe (Scandinavia and Germany), Britain, Russia, USA and Canada, and art theories and practices developed in these regions. My work is guided by the concept of emotional intelligence which builds on early progressive art theories developed by practioners, who like me were also writers, such as the German, Carl Gustav Carus and the Swede, Richard Bergh. I strongly believe that what is being neglected in contemporary art practice is an emotional content, at its deepest level, married to intellectual ideas and universal themes; for example, I am interested in the transposition of the contemplative image/icon from its religion-specific dialogue to a contemporary “non-specific” context and discourse. As primarily a painter in oils, who has an extensive knowledge of art history and how visual vocabulary was developed by artists, I see the continual research of theory, painting methods and materials as an essential part of my practice.
