Biography
I was born in Venezuela from Italian parents. I was mostly raised and educated in Italy. At the age of twenty-one I moved to the United States. Having more than one place I call home has given me a broad perspective about people, their cultures and their experiences. Having artistic roots in both Europe and the New World has also been a key to my identity as an artist, as I have approached a contemporary style of figurative sculpture from a classical background.
My sculpture is mostly focused on the human figure; it is for the most part modeled in clay from direct observation and from imagination. Later it is translated in other media. I enjoy working on both pedestal- bound small sculptures and large-scale outdoor or indoor sculpture.
My artwork addresses fundamental aspects of my own experiences as a woman. These experiences inform the conceptual essence and formal qualities of the work. Some of my images have a dual quality of being both serene and anguished. The prevalent white tone implies a coolness, distance and detachment that separate the figures from ordinary existence. The result is a sculpture that is sensual and distant, impassioned and yet meticulously observed.
