Biography

I work in both photography and video. I see them both as an important part of my practice, completing each other.
My practice attempts to shift the marginal, the peripheral to the center of vision. I ask that we look long and hard at spaces of repetition and accumulation. To fold and fault surfaces we otherwise take for granted, highlighting in size, position and detail the abjectness of the otherwise invisible.
I play with the indexical nature of photography; strip it down to its most basic act – the transcription of light on a sensitized surface. The traces that I photograph mirror the photographic act as scratches on the surface that we inhabit. I photograph the trace, that which is no longer there but it does represent presence, the body. By photographing these marginal details; stains, traces, dust, dirt, I bring them to the center of vision, allowing them to exist and prevail. The traces of life that I capture, such as strands of hair, dust in an apartment, furniture imprints on a carpet, are incredibly personal in their connection to the body, but it is impossible to identify the person whose life they represent and thus create a dialogue between personal and collective...
