Biography

I am using abstract painting to express the divergence between intellect and emotion. It is my view that much of our life experience involves the struggle to balance these poles of the human mind. I find this concept is reflected as I work to resolve the elements in my paintings, moving between spontaneity and control.

These encaustic paintings start as a simple geometric structure . This structure is a format that suggests the world of ideas to me, and includes stability, confinement and predictability. Within the painting, I practice control over areas that are scraped, smoothed, and incised. I work intuitively to build complexity in layers of wax and nuances of color and texture. At some point, accidental effects occur. Either they happen spontaneously, or I work in a way that is less controlled and seek to bring them about. This process correlates to the inevitability of the unpredictable, and suggests to me the emotional substance of our inner lives. My intent is for the painting to reflect this dynamic and to become a record of its own creation.
