Biography

Aurelio’s art work has received first prize for two years in a row from the New Rochelle Art Association, and second prize from the Art society of old Greenwich 2005 annual juried show and participated in Craft USA’05 where one of his pieces was selected out of 850 works presented from artists all over US. Last month his work received Honorable mention for his small sculptures at the Mamaroneck Artists’ Guild. His work has been featured in Arts Exchange Gallery in White Plains and at El Museo Del Barrio in NYC, and many boutiques in the tri state area.

Aurelio’s story and work have been featured in the Larchmont Gazette and the Journal News. He was recognized in 2002 as an “Orgullo Hispano” by the Latin television station-channel Univision 41, and the local newspaper in his home town in Colombia devoted an entire page to the story of his success in the US. In 2005 The Hispanic Resource Center of Mamaroneck, New York recognized Aurelio with the “Amigo” award for his work with the Latino community in Westchester. The New York Times published a story on him in 2006, and most recently he was the subject of “Haciendo Patria”, a program on Colombia’s Telecafe Television Network, which highlights successful Colombians abroad.

Aurelio works at the Westchester Community College Center for the Arts and exhibits his jewelry and ceramic works around the tri-state area. He is a member of the Mamaroneck Artist Guild in Larchmont, NY and the Old Greenwich Arts association in Greenwich, Connecticut. He helped develop and directs the Artistico Group, an arts program for the day laborers and their families in Westchester as a way to give back and share his knowledge with people like him, who are struggling to make the American Dream a reality.
