Biography

My work often takes the form of large print, high resolution photo pieces, either for single hanging or as part of an installation, however I find myself increasingly drawn to my previous involvement with the moving image and am currently involved in a variety of video projects.

A continuing theme in my work is the exploration of what it is to represent the 'moment' - that illusory space which image attempts to represent, and yet which is impossible to pin down. I like to draw together elements of the past and future and present them in the 'present' - a trick that can only be accomplished by suggestion and a certain philosophical suspension of scientific belief.

I was an early adopter of open reel b/w video production in the mid 70’s, with occasional residencies at broadcast TV stations and educational departments. I have exhibited and toured my work around the world and, amongst many others, had my work shown in the ICA, Tate, Air and Serpentine galleries in the UK, and in many international festivals globally. My last show was an ongoing piece called 'Gestalt' shown at Durham City art gallery in 2010.

I am currently working on a large project which will be both a video and an installation to be premièred in Hartlepool next year. It is concerned with memory and the effect that has on the present in terms of re-call. Its subject is the re-creation of a demolished dance hall using dancers re-living their experiences.

I undertake commercial work to fund my fine art practice and received a Royal Television Society award for television graphics in 1996 and was a winner of the Fuji professional distinctions photography awards in 2003/04.

I travel hopefully and am always grateful to those who both help and collaborate with me.
