Biography
I represent the subconscious and escapism in my artwork. I use painting and photography as my primary media. The paintings are images from my mind that I don’t know how to say any other way. Painting is the medium that allows me to express my ideas, while in photographs I show pristine landscapes. The running theme in both is the tension of opposites. It is locating and redefining these opposites that inspires my work, while maintaining the idea of the subconscious. The paintings are bright with color; the photographs are landscapes concerned with the traces of human activity. Both are representational, though in different ways.
By isolating the middle between extremes, I discover myself and relationships with the people and places around me. I invite the viewer to add his or her own narrative to the visual with this way of working.
My newest paintings are concerned with deconstructing the figure and pushing the boundary of how little representation is needed to imply complete ideas. This idea of rationing information is one I have been working on for some time.
