Biography
AKOMENA Spazio Mosaico was founded in Ravenna, in 1988, based on an idea by Francesca Fabbri who, with the benefit of her own training background and experience takes a multidisciplinary approach to mosaic work, aiming at taking a new look at traditional mosaic work by drawing knowledge from contemporary research and experimentation in the field of interior architecture and design.
Francesca Fabbri started by collaborating with master mosaicists, of the Ravenna school, who produced furnishing accessories to her designs. In 1990 she began a lasting co-operation with Giuliano Babini whose artistic advice has led to the realisation of true collections produced with the contribution of architects, artists and designers.
In 1990, Akomena took part with Luigi Serafini in the "Design Balneare III", part of a series of exhibitions by Ugo La Pietra, which also included realisation of the mosaic entitled "Monumenti alla balnearità" in the town centre of Cattolica and a series of objects, designed by the architect, using mosaics as the leit- motive.
While continually taking part in an intensive programme of Exhibitions - including "per abitare con l'arte", Milan 1991; "The Italian art of living", New York 1992 and "Musive", Ravenna 1992 - the first collection was inaugurated in 1993: "Emblemata" organized by Elisabetta Gonzo who presented ten little tables designed by master artists which included ideas from Riccardo Dalisi, Ugo Marano, Adolfo Natalini, Giuliano Babini, Gianni Veneziano; interior decorators including Bonetti & Garouste and i Ravage…
Collaboration also began, in this period, with Ettore Sottsass, the first intervention being the mosaic decoration of the "magic room" at the Museo dell'Arredo Contemporaneo (Museum of Contemporary Furnishing) founded by Biagetti in Russi (near Ravenna) which developed into a series of furnishing objects and accessories.
