Biography

What distinguishes the sculptures of Giuseppe Tirelli is their commitment to fantasy. The figures he creates refer to a wide variety of popular stories and myths. "Captain America", for example, is a bulky, slight overweight hero from a fantastic world, wearing formidable boots and gauntlets with a large star on his chest.
Tirelli's modeling is strikingly fresh, he picks up, reshapes and renews elements in the European sculptural tradition, he is not an academic artist and he makes sculptures that challenge virtually all currently accepted Modernist and Post-Modernist ideas.
His sculptures are intended to be adornments for an unashamedly civilized life-style; they are not rethorical and play delicately with a wide range of ideas.
Tirelli does not challenge - he subverts.
