Biography
I am interested in the physiological process of how we see the world and seek to incorporate this in the work I create which reflects upon our ability to change focus, from vast to minute; seeing not only what is visible, but also the non-visible, yet possible.
The lens of the verbal and non-verbal languages which we carry with us, we use to describe what we see, with our words and/or our actions. The cultural component of language that fascinates me the most is that of history/memory, which is formed by both the individual and the group. Through the use of layering, I hope to create a sense of simultaneity while making reference to a great history within the artwork.
The biological, the cellular structure of living things I use as a metaphor, represented by the various cell-like structures in my visual language, to explore the layers of communication occurring within and between bodies.. I also use the grid upon which information flows and structure, or better order, is maintained or disrupted.
I do not wish to reduce the paintings to purely philosophical excavations into language and physiology no more than I wish them to be taken as pure non-objective designs, ready to be featured in the next contemporary home furnishings catalogue. Formal and technical aspects in regards to contrasting glazes, intensity, density and transparency of color in my work are meant to enhance the metaphor of the biological and language/history/memory while creating an aesthetically positive experience for the viewer. The positive experience must not be a pleasant picture, but it should leave the viewer with a sense of possibility for the history and memory that will be.
My recent work is focused on paintings on canvas ranging in size from 5 inches square, my preferred format, to area rug size floor cloths. I also produce many works on paper incorporating collage and mono-print techniques as well as various size paintings on wood panel. I began my studies in the mid 1980s with an emphasis on sculpture and printmaking. Currently I live and work in Providence, Rhode Island. -
