Biography

A lifelong cultural observer, Hiers questions the ultimate future of the human species as we accelerate along our collision course of increasing consumption with decreasingly available resources. Since 2004, Hiers has gathered fragments of exploded tires from highways throughout the American West for sculptures in which he explores the intereconected web that provides for human survivial, and its contradictory appeals and perils. These works are about our increasing dependence on vulnerable networks of transportation for our food, clothing, shelter and health needs. Ripped tire fragments metaphorically illustrate the violent tension between the forces of our consumer culture and the more powerful forces of nature. This body of work is a call for a new ideology that provides a sustanalbe, balanced means for human survival within the natural world that supports us.
