Biography
Kirsty E Smith was born in Glasgow, Scotland but now lives and works in Birmingham, England.
Her practice draws on a passion for architecture and the optimism of Futurism. As humans we have a fundamental need to make sense of the world and our place in it. The world comes to human experience transmitted into the brain in a vast flow of neural impulses from the eye, the ear, the tongue, skin and so on. Kirsty E Smith responds to her own sensory experiences of spaces, both architectural and domestic, by making sculptural works which themselves trigger the senses, taking viewers on a journey of their own.
Her intention is to create work which resonates on a deeply emotive level and which acts as a vehicle to reconnect with a 'place' or memory deep in our subconscious. Frillip Moolog is the name that she has given to such a place.
Smith takes a playful approach to scale, and the sculptural forms which she creates are inspired as much by industrial design as by architecture. Tactile details are a keynote in her work; working with a disparate range of materials which in combination have a powerful effect on the senses.
She works at the hinge of different worlds: between that of vintage Sci-Fi and the domestic and everyday.
Her sculptures are 'vessels' which hold and suggest many ideas simultaneously. They are rich with history and narrative, both in a personal and more general sense.
Her interest in performance and the theatrical is especially evident in her film 'Trolley Happenings', 4 mins 2010.
Since graduating with a first class honours degree in 2006 she has exhibited in both group and solo shows, been awarded several prizes including an Arts Council Award for her solo show 'Close Encounters of Frillip Moolog Kind' 2009.
